Surprise! GOP Blocks Minimum Wage Increase

In a completely predictable move, Senate Republicans today voted to filibuster a bill that would raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10. I know, take a minute to gather your thoughts, folks. Some Republicans have accused the Democrats of using this issue as a political wedge. Yes, my friends, that’s what politics is: wedges. You have some people that think one thing, and another group thinks another thing, and hey, pretty soon people are voting for the the group they agree with. When something comes along and they disagree with their usual group, they sometimes vote for the other group! What a crazy idea!

THE PRESIDENT:

So Americans have been way out in front of Congress on this issue.  In fact, about three in four Americans support raising the minimum wage.  And that’s because we believe that in the wealthiest nation on Earth, nobody who works full-time should ever have to raise a family in poverty.  That’s a basic principle.  (Applause.)  And at a time when those at the top are doing better than ever, while millions of Americans are working harder and harder just to get by, that three out of four Americans understands that America deserves a raise.

There’s also this little gem.

Here’s a video of Obama making some remarks on the issue, and is it just me or does he appear to be enjoying himself at the beginning?

On the good side, though, Hawaii just passed a bill to raise its minimum wage to $10.10. It will probably be signed into law. We’ll have to sit back and wait to see how long it takes for the jobs to evaporate and the youths to become nihilists and the marauding hordes of blah blah blah to start doing whatever terrible stuff happens when a state raises the wage floor. The really good news from Hawaii, however, has to do with how the new law will affect tipped workers.
